consciousness-based education and governmentabout the authorSDr. Charles “Skip” Alexander, Ph.D., (1950-1998), showed theoreticallythat four higher states of consciousness described by MaharishiVedic Psychology logically extend the developmental sequence delineatedby twentieth-century psychology. His empirical research foundthat the Transcendental Meditation technique provides the directexperience of Transcendental Consciousness (the first higher state, which is the silent basis of the mind) and that this practice acceleratesdevelopment in children, “unfreezes” development in prison inmates, advances ego development in adults, increases productivity in businesses, decreases blood pressure, increases longevity, effectively treatssubstance abuse, and reduces prison recidivism. Skip and colleagueswere the first to discover the EEG signature of Cosmic Consciousness(the second higher state), and he showed that developmental advancesin individuals impact the larger society via a common field of collectiveconsciousness, including decreasing armed conflicts and improvingthe quality of life. Dr. Alexander was Chairman of the Department ofPsychology at Maharishi University of Management.David W. Orme-Johnson, Ph.D., was Chairman of the PsychologyDepartment, Director of the Doctoral Program in Psychology, andDirector of the Institute of World Peace at Maharishi University ofManagement. He received his B.A. from Columbia University in 1963and Ph.D. from the University of Maryland in 1969 in experimentalpsychology. Dr. Orme-Johnson has pioneered research on Maharishi’sTranscendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi programs in several areas, including autonomic stability, EEG coherence, intelligence, field independence, medical care utilization, prison rehabilitation, quality oflife, and conflict resolution. His papers have appeared in such journalsas American Psychologist, Psychosomatic Medicine, International Journal ofNeuroscience, Personality and Individual Differences, and Journal of ConflictResolution. Dr. Orme-Johnson was co-editor of Volumes 1 and 5 ofScientific Research on Maharishi’s Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhiprogram: Collected Papers.
