Maharishi himself has laid the foundations of this new scienceby showing, first, how a precise subjective science of consciousness isestablished on the basis of the direct experience of consciousness in itspure form; and second, how the experimental method can be usedto test empirically the assertions of the subjective science. ThroughMaharishi’s work, for the first time in history, the full potential ofhuman consciousness can be investigated both through direct experienceand through the objective methods of modern science. The foundationsof this new science linking the subjective and objective methodwill now be considered.Experiential FoundationsPrior to Maharishi’s work, the term consciousness was considered toovague and indefinite to be allowed into scientific discussion. It wasexcluded from science as a metaphysical term because consciousnesswas not objectively observable, and therefore apparently not amenableto scientific investigation. Through Maharishi’s work, the concept ofconsciousness has been given a precise, well-defined meaning on thebasis of direct experience, and its relation to the objective framework ofscience has been precisely specified.The experience of pure consciousness, available to anyone throughregular practice of the Transcendental Meditation technique, is a basisfor precise experiential knowledge of consciousness in its simplest, mostfundamental, and most unified state. Even though consciousness cannever be an object of experience, when the conscious mind becomescompletely settled in a wakeful state, it experiences its own nature aspure wakefulness, pure consciousness, without any activity or objectivecontent. Through the repeatable, systematic experience of this silent butwakeful state of mind, the concept of pure consciousness, which hasbeen subject to conjecture and debate throughout the centuries, is nowavailable to direct experience.588
