consciousness-based education and govermentdistinctions being created within the wholeness of consciousness, asconsciousness knows itself. Thus from the perspective of MaharishiVedic Science, the entire universe is just an expression of consciousnessmoving within itself: All activity in nature is just activity within theunchanging continuum of the wholeness of consciousness.Through the texts of ancient Vedic science, as interpreted by Maharishi,we possess a rich account of the emergence of diversity out of the unityof natural law. On the basis of this account, it becomes feasible to comparethe Vedic description of the origin of the universe with that of themodern sciences.Modern Science and Maharishi Vedic ScienceWhen Maharishi heard from major scientists of the recent advancesof unified field theory in physics, he asserted that modern science hadglimpsed the unified field described in ancient Vedic science. “Theknowledge of the unified field,” he said (1986, p. 29), “has been discoveredby modern science during just the last few years, but the completeknowledge of the unified field has always been available in the Vedicliterature.” Modern science, he proposed, had now arrived at the edgeof comprehending, through unified quantum field theories, what Vedicscience had described on the basis of exploration of the least excitedstate of consciousness since ancient times: that all diversity in naturesequentially emerges from a unified source through a precise self-interactingdynamics. Modern experimental science and Maharishi VedicScience could now be seen as two diverse yet mutually complementaryapproaches to knowing the same underlying reality—one throughthe empirical method, the other through the exploration of the leastexcited state of consciousness. Through Maharishi’s inspiration, thishas become a major research program that has engaged the attention ofmany scientists and that has yielded very rich results.Over the past decade, Maharishi has participated in numerous symposiawith major scientists on the theme of exploring modern scienceand Vedic science to discover detailed structural similarities in theirdescriptions of the unified field. These symposia have attracted eminentunified field theorists, mathematicians, and physiologists, including anumber of Nobel laureates, as well as many of the most highly recognizedPandits of the Vedic tradition.
