He attended Purdue University as a UniversityFellow, receiving his M.S. in 1973 and his Ph.D. in 1976 inpsychology. Dr. Dillbeck has published widely, including papers on thetheoretical foundations of Consciousness-Based approaches to psychologyand education, including empirical research testing the predictionsof this theory on such variables as EEG coherence, perceptual and cognitiveflexibility, reduced anxiety, reduction of crime rate, and improvedquality of life in society. These papers have appeared in such journalsas Memory and Cognition, Journal of Clinical Psychology, Psychologia, TheJournal of Mind and Behavior, and International Journal of Comparativeand Applied Criminal Justice.266
TRANSCEnDENTAL MEDITATION PROGRAM and CORRECTIONSabstractThis paper describes research studies on the application of the TranscendentalMeditation (TM) program to corrections and crime prevention. Physiologicaland psychological laboratory studies of the Transcendental Meditationprogram that bear on inmate rehabilitation are briefly reviewed, followedby consideration of applied studies. Research projects in eight correctional settingsare narratively and quantitatively reviewed. They indicate that regularpractice of the Transcendental Meditation program leads to positive changesin health, personality development, and behavior among inmates. Evidenceof reduced recidivism among inmates instructed in the Transcendental Meditationprogram is also indicated. Implications of the research for some correctionalissues are also discussed.IntroductionThe need for effective means of criminal rehabilitation and crimeprevention has become increasingly acute. The number of individualsincarcerated in prisons in the United States is almostone-half million, a figure which has grown by over 60 per cent since1977 (U.S. Department of Justice, 1985a). Contributing greatly to thisgrowth is the fact that, as of 1979, 61 percent of inmates have servedat least one prior criminal commitment (U.S. Department of Justice,1985b). At the same time, the crime rate in society has grown rapidlyfrom 1960 to 1981, with some decrease since then. As a result of theincreasing demands on the police, the judiciary, and penal institutions,over $24 billion was spent on criminal justice activities in the U.S. in1981; expenditures by state correctional systems were $7.2 billion in1984, an increase of 60 percent from 1980 (U.S. Department of Justice,1985a). In addition to this is the cost in human terms; a figure cannotbe placed upon the suffering generated by crime.It is in the context of the great need in corrections that the importanceof the large body of recent research on the successful applicationof the Transcendental Meditation program in corrections can beappreciated. In this paper, the general effects of the technique are firstreviewed, followed by the results of its use in correctional settings.267
