the maharishi effect and government• The Effect Size was calculated for the parameter results. Thisentailed dividing the t value for the independent variable parameterby the square root of the effective number of observations forthe model. The effect size provides a statistic which allows comparisonacross variables. Results:National Demonstration ProjectUsing the structural break analysis, there was a statistically significantchange in trend in the predicted direction for all seven variables duringthe experimental period. Using two-tailed tests during the controlyears, there were no significant changes, except the Quality of LifeIndex which changed in the wrong direction (worsening of quality oflife). Using one-tailed tests during the control year, media changed inthe predicted direction (increased positivity). Thus, with one-tailed testsfor the control year, two out of seven variables changed significantly, onein the opposite direction and one in the predicted direction.Table 1 shows the results of the structural-break analysis with eachdependent variable, giving the type of parameters in the model, theParameter Values, the t value, p value, and summary statistics, includingEffective Number of Observations, R 2 , AIC, Residual StandardError, and Q statistic at lag 12.1) The t statistic indicates the significance of the change in the trend ofthe variable.2) The parameter value indicates the change in the trend of the variable.3) The effective number of observations gives the number of data-pointsutilized in a particular noise model (and is used to calculate the Q statisticand the “AIC”).4) The R 2 , or Coefficient of Determination, indicates the percentage ofvariance accounted for by the model.5) The p value indicates the level of significance of the t statistic: thelevel of probability that the result was due to chance under the nullhypothesis of no intervention effect.6) The residual standard error is the standard deviation of the residuals, and is used as a measure of model accuracy. All seven variables showed a significantly changed trend in the predicteddirection toward greater positivity after the start of the NDP.243
