consciousness-based education and govermentimpasse in its ability to experimentally investigate the unified field,because the energies required to probe these finer scales exceed thoseattainable by any conceivable particle accelerator technology. Whenphysics can go no further, Maharishi’s technologies of consciousness,facilitate inquiry beyond the limitations of the objective approach byproviding an effective means of exploring the unified field on the levelof direct experience.This exploration of the unified field through the subjective experienceof consciousness is a well-structured program of research. It is guidedby the knowledge of Maharishi Vedic Science set forth by Maharishi inconjunction with the modern sciences. When descriptions of the unifiedfield from the standpoint of modern science, of Maharishi VedicScience, and of direct experience coalesce, the three together providea basis for complete knowledge. This program of research is based onMaharishi’s exposition of the Vedic literature as a complete and detailedexpression of the unified field.According to Maharishi’s exposition of the Veda, the sequentialemergence of the diverse laws of nature from the unified field canbe directly experienced in the field of consciousness as a sequence ofsounds; these are presented in the sequential emergence of phonologicalstructures of the Vedic texts. Veda is just the structure of the selfinteractingdynamics through which the unified field gives rise to thediverse expressions of natural law. Fundamental theoretical conceptsin physics and other disciplines, insofar as they are valid descriptionsof nature, should therefore correspond to different aspects of Vedic literaturethat describe these realities from the standpoint of directexperience.The basic program of research of modern science and MaharishiVedic Science, as conceived by Maharishi, thus has three major goals:(1) to develop an integrated structure of knowledge by fathoming thedepth of correspondence between the principles of modern science andVedic Science; (2) to provide, from Maharishi Vedic Science, a foundationin direct experience for the most profound theoretical conceptsof modern science; and (3) to resolve the impasse faced by the objectiveapproach of modern science through the addition of the subjectiveapproach of Maharishi Vedic Science, which provides complete knowledgeof nature on the basis of the complete development of the knower.586
Modern science and vedic science: an introductionIn another issue of Modern Science and Vedic Science [see Vol. 5, Pt. 1of this series], Dr. M.H. Weinless (1987) explored set theory and otherfoundational areas of modern mathematics in relation to Maharishi VedicScience. In a proposed issue, Drs. R.K. Wallace, D.S. Pasco, and J.B.Fagan (1988) explore the fundamental relationship between MaharishiVedic Science and the foundational areas of modern physiology, such asmolecular biology. Their paper also discusses the extent to which fundamentalprinciples of Maharishi Vedic Science can be used to furtherinvestigation of DNA structure and function.The discovery of deep structures of knowledge and principles commonto Maharishi Vedic Science and modern science represents such aprofound contribution to our understanding of nature that this journalwas founded to foster continued scholarly investigation of the interrelationsbetween these complementary methods of gaining knowledge.Knowledge gained by direct experience of the fine fabrics of nature’sactivity, and knowledge gained by the experimental methods of modernscience coalesce in a new integrated method of inquiry that offersboth the fundamental principles of modern science and the expressionsof direct experience in Maharishi Vedic Science as two facets of onereality of nature’s functioning.Maharishi (1986) sums up the relation between Maharishi VedicScience, modern science, and his technologies of consciousness:Maharishi Vedic Science is applied through the Technology of the UnifiedField. We speak of the unified field in connection with MaharishiVedic Science because of the similarity of what has been discovered byphysics and what exists in the self-referral state of human consciousness.The Technology of the Unified Field [That is, TranscendentalMeditation and TM-Sidhi programs, including Yogic Flying—Eds.].is a purely scientific procedure for the total development of the humanpsyche, the total development of the race. This is a time when objective,science-based progress in the world is being enriched by the possibilityof total development of human life on earth, and this is the reason whywe anticipate the creation of a unified field-based civilization. (p. 35)On the basis of the universal availability of this domain of experience,an empirical science of consciousness becomes possible for thefirst time.587
