The woman is considered property along with theland. As property, the purchaser must buy her, “and beforethe elders of my people. If you will redeem it, redeemit.” Then, Boaz asked the kinsman, “If you want to buyher, you can because you have first choice to redeem Ruth[then he adds] but if you will not redeem it, then tell me, thatI may know: for there is none to redeem it beside you: andI am after you.” He is saying, “If you don’t buy her, thenI have the right to buy her.” Remember she is property atthis point. That is what Ruth 4 tells you, “And he [a kinsman]said, I will redeem it. 5 Then said Boaz, What day youbuy the field of the hand of Naomi, you must buy it also ofRuth the Moabitess, the wife of the dead.” Here, the contractis spelled out. It is not merely a contract betweenpeople for people but, also, for the land. By buying theland that belonged to Elimelech, Boaz also buys Naomiand Ruth (with Ruth, as his wife). Notice, “the wife of thedead, to raise up the name of the dead [so, The Inheritance
