The Spirit Versus The Letter369What happened to The Old Covenant? “In that he said,a new covenant, he has made the first old, Now that whichdecays and waxes old is ready to vanish away” (Hebrews8:13). It ended in 70 A.D. with the fall of the temple. Theteaching could not be any clearer. The Covenant, underthe administration of Moses (Law of Moses), was to vanishaway. That is simple and plain. Remember what Christsaid. He revealed that men prefer the old wine or The OldCovenant. It is hard for humanity to give up old ideas.When a person thinks they know what is true and thenunderstands a new truth, it is very difficult to give up thoseold beliefs.The DifferenceTo understand the difference between The Old Covenantand The New Covenant, you must first understand thatthere is more than one Law. As you found in Chapter 10,‘What Is The Added Law?’ there are three Laws. The firstLaw, The Torah, includes the entire First Five Books ofThe Bible and was written to disclose Christ as The Messiah(Hebrews 10:1). The two other laws, The Torah andThe Oral Law, are also in The Torah or The First FiveBooks of The Old Testament. God added a Law to The Torahand The Ten Commandments for a different purposethan the rest of The Torah (Deuteronomy 5). The Torah, inGreek “Nomas,” was “to reveal Christ as The Messiah andSavior of the world.” The added Law had a specific limitationto it as well as a different purpose than the entireTorah. What was that difference?This added Law was incorporated because of sin and itwas only to last until Christ came (Galatians 3:19). This
