God was making this covenantbecause something else had to be done.A Mighty DisplayGod showed Israel a mighty display of His power to reinforcethe seriousness of what was transpiring, “ 4 The Lordtalked with you face to face in the mount out of the midst ofthe fire. 5 I stood between the Lord and you at that time, toshow you the word of the Lord: for you were afraid by reasonof the fire.” God is a consuming fire so He could not showHimself (Hebrews 12:29). If He had, then Moses wouldhave been burned to a crisp. A powerful figure, an angel,represents God (Acts 7). “For you were afraid by reasonof the fire and went not up into the mount saying, 6 I am theLord your God.” Now, onto The Ten Commandments.Deuteronomy 5:22-27 22 These words the Lord spoketo all your assembly in the mount out of the midst ofthe fire, of the cloud and of the thick darkness, witha great voice: and he added no more.
