13 WINDOW COVERINGS<br />

There are a variety of coverings in OPH including:<br />

■■Metal/vinyl Venetian blinds<br />

■■Velvet curtains (with and without linings)<br />

■■Net fabric curtains – of various weave patterns and fibres (with and without linings)<br />

■■Canvas Holland blinds<br />

■■Versol slimline blinds<br />

■■Sheer fabric curtains<br />

■■UV film<br />

In general as most of the window coverings date from the 1970’s they are in reasonable condition.<br />

All window coverings however, are at risk of fast and total decay as a result of their location<br />

in windows where they are exposed to extremely high visible and UV light radiation.<br />

Permitted Actions<br />

Regular visual inspections of carpet and monitoring as<br />

outlined in the Human Impact Management Program,<br />

the Integrated Pest Management Plan and the Building<br />

Fabric Investigation Permitted Action Schedule.<br />

Regular cleaning in accordance with the<br />

Housekeeping Permitted Actions Schedule.<br />

Dry-cleaning curtains using<br />

commercial grade equipment.<br />

Brush vacuuming or wet wiping Venetian<br />

blinds in accordance with the Housekeeping<br />

Permitted Action Schedule.<br />

Repairs by a trained window coverings<br />

technician or a conservator.<br />

Application of removable UV film to<br />

internal windows to reduce light.<br />

Installation of new helioscreen blinds<br />

using existing screw holes.<br />

Not Permitted Actions<br />

Invasive inspections.<br />

Cleaning with un-authorised products.<br />

Wet-cleaning curtains using domestic<br />

or commercial grade equipment<br />

Removal of window treatments.<br />

Repairs by anyone other than a trained window<br />

coverings technician or a conservator.
