Movable Heritage (Collections)<br />

Conservation and<br />

management of<br />

movable heritage<br />

and collections<br />

1.10.1 The Old Parliament House Collection<br />

Management Policy must be the principal guide for<br />

decisions about the collection (Part C, Chapter 10).<br />

1.10.2 Old Parliament House management must be<br />

guided by the AICCM Code of Practice, the ICOM<br />

Code of Ethics for Museums and the Museums<br />

Australia (MA) Code of Ethics.<br />

1.10.3 Access and use of collection items must be<br />

balanced against the conservation, care and security<br />

of the items to ensure their long term conservation<br />

and survival (Collection Management Policy 6.2).<br />

1.10.4 Acquisitions to the collection are encouraged<br />

where they contribute to and enhance the heritage<br />

values of Old Parliament House (Collection<br />

Management Policy 3).<br />

1.10.5 All items offered to OPH for inclusion in the<br />

collection, whether purchased or donated, must be<br />

recommended by the OPH Acquisition Committee<br />

to the Delegate for approval before becoming a part<br />

of the OPH collection (NB this does not include the<br />

purchase of Resource material such as books or<br />

journals) (Collection Management Policy 3.3).<br />

1.10.6 All items must be accessioned to international<br />

standards and recorded in a database (Collection<br />

Management Policy 4).<br />

1.10.7 Storage must be made available on site as<br />

far as practicable as a priority to ensure security,<br />

environmental management and monitoring.<br />

1.10.8 Old Parliament House may permit off-site<br />

loans for conservation management and exhibition in<br />

accordance with the Collection Management Policy.<br />

1.10.9 Old Parliament House must develop a<br />

Memorandum Of Understanding with the owners of<br />

items which contribute to the heritage values of the<br />

place but are not owned by Old Parliament House.<br />

Specific tasks<br />

Update and implement the Collection<br />

Management Policy to be consistent with<br />

the Heritage Management Plan.<br />

Complete the movable heritage database<br />

and link it to this Heritage Management<br />

Plan.<br />

Complete outstanding accessioning.<br />

Reassess the depreciation value and<br />

conservation requirements of the<br />

collections.<br />

Implement standards of AICCM Code<br />

of Practice, ICOM Code of Ethics for<br />

Museums and the Museums Australia<br />

(MA) Code of Ethics.<br />

Review the collection storage facilities<br />

at Old Parliament House to provide an<br />

appropriate on site environment for<br />

storage of movable heritage.<br />

Update and implement the Storage Plan.<br />

Develop a schedule of items which<br />

contribute to the heritage values of Old<br />

Parliament House but are not owned by<br />

Old Parliament House.<br />
