years later. <strong>The</strong> IAS started in 1932 as the Institute <strong>of</strong> Aeronautical<br />

Science, with Orville Wright as its first honorary<br />

member, and substituted “Aerospace” in its title in 1960.<br />

AIAA and its founding societies have been at the forefront<br />

<strong>of</strong> the aerospace pr<strong>of</strong>ession from the outset, beginning<br />

with the launch <strong>of</strong> a series <strong>of</strong> small experimental rockets<br />

before World War II based on designs used by the Verein<br />

für Raumschiffahrt (German Society for Space Travel).<br />

Ames, Mil<strong>to</strong>n B., Jr. (1913–)<br />

A leading aerodynamicist in the early days <strong>of</strong> the American<br />

space program. Ames earned a B.S. in aeronautical<br />

Ames Research Center (ARC) 17<br />

engineering from Georgia Tech in 1936 and joined the<br />

LangleyAeronautical Labora<strong>to</strong>ry that same year. In 1941,<br />

he transferred <strong>to</strong> the headquarters <strong>of</strong> NACA (National<br />

Advisory Committee for Aeronautics), where he served<br />

on the technical staff, becoming chief <strong>of</strong> the aerodynamics<br />

division in 1946. Following the creation <strong>of</strong> NASA,<br />

Ames was appointed chief <strong>of</strong> the aerodynamics and flight<br />

mechanics research division. In 1960, he became deputy<br />

direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> the <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>of</strong> advanced research programs at<br />

NASA Headquarters and then direc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong> space vehicles<br />

in 1961. He retired from the space program in 1972.<br />

Ames Research Center (ARC)<br />

A major NASA facility located at M<strong>of</strong>fett Field, California,<br />

in the heart <strong>of</strong> Silicon Valley. Ames was founded on<br />

December 20, 1939, by NACA(National Advisory Committee<br />

for Aeronautics) as an aircraft research labora<strong>to</strong>ry,<br />
