ITOS-1 was also known as TIROS M, but later spacecraft<br />

in the series were given NOAA (National Oceanic and<br />

Atmospheric Administration) designations after NOAA<br />

<strong>to</strong>ok over the management <strong>of</strong> the program from ESSA<br />

(Environmental Science Services Administration).<br />

IUE (International Ultraviolet Explorer)<br />

<strong>The</strong> first satellite <strong>to</strong>tally dedicated <strong>to</strong> ultraviolet astronomy.<br />

A joint NASA-ESA (European Space Agency) mission,<br />

IUE carried a 45-cm-diameter telescope and two<br />

spectrographs for use in the range <strong>of</strong> 115 <strong>to</strong> 320 nm. It<br />

operated successfully for more than 18 years—the longest-<br />

lived astronomical satellite—until it was switched <strong>of</strong>f in<br />

September 1996.<br />
