Molten glass<br />

Mould<br />

Glass is produced by pouring molten glass into a mould.<br />

Ceramic enamel (frit)<br />

A combination of crushed glass, metal oxide colourants and flux mixed in an oil or water<br />

medium and fused onto glass. Also known as ceramic ink.<br />

Cerium oxide<br />

A compound used alone or together with other substances as a polishing agent for glass.<br />

Chair rail<br />

A fixed glazing bar or rigid push bar that provides protection from human impact. Also<br />

known as a crash rail.<br />

Chamfer<br />

A transitional edge between two faces of an object. A form of bevel, it is created at a 45°<br />

angle to two adjoining right-angled faces.<br />

Channel<br />

A U-shaped opening in a sash or frame to receive glass or insulating glass unit.<br />

Channel depth<br />

The measurement from the bottom of the channel to the top.<br />

Channel width<br />

The distance between the fixed and removable beads at the widest point.<br />

Chemically toughened glass<br />

Chemical toughening of glass is brought about through a process known as ion-exchange.<br />

Glass is submersed in a molten salt bath at temperatures below the annealing range of<br />

the glass. In the case of soda lime silica glass, the salt bath consists of potassium-nitrate.<br />

During the submersion a chemical reaction takes place leaving the glass stronger.<br />

Chip<br />

A small shallow piece of glass which has become detached from the original glass edge or<br />

the void it has left.<br />

Chord<br />

A straight line (or measurement) joining ends of an arc.<br />
