Basic Components of an Insulated Glass Unit
A standard double glazed unit (DGU) or insulated glass unit (IGU) consists of two or
more panes of glass, separated along their entire perimeter by either a rigid, tube
spacer or a flexible, foam spacer. The spacer frame is fixed to the glass by means of
a primary sealant such as polyisobutylene (PIB).
A rigid, tube spacer frame is typically filled with desiccant in two to four of its legs
whilst a desiccant compound is already included in a flexible, foam spacer. The
desiccant adsorbs moisture that has become trapped in the unit during manufacture
as well as moisture that diffuses through the edge seal throughout the life span of the
unit.
A secondary sealant is applied to the back of the spacer frame to seal the unit. There
is no vacuum between the two or more panes of glass, the unit cavity is filled with dry
air or, to improve its thermal performance, an inert gas such as Argon.
