Glossary Of Terms / E-F
Edgebanding
Method used to give the outside perimeter of the glass a protective coating to protect
adhesives from UV rays. Usually done using ceramic inks on the glass which is then
toughened.
Edge cover
The distance between the edge of the glass and the edge of the rebate forming the sight
opening of the window frame.
Edge lift
Edge lift is a deviation that occurs at the edge of flat glass that has undergone heatstrengthening
or tempering. The heat treatment process can cause the glass to bow or
warp. Monitoring of edge lift is an important quality control parameter.
Elastomer
A rubbery material that returns to approximately its original dimensions in a short time after
a relatively large amount of deformation.
Elastomeric
Being of an elastic, rubber-like substance, such as natural or synthetic rubber. This means
that the material can move with the surrounding material without breaking down.
Emissivity
This describes the relative ability of the surface of a material to emit energy by radiation.
For the glass industry, this term normally refers to the far-infrared energy band more
commonly known as “heat” or “thermal” energy. Emissivity is the ratio of energy emitted
by a surface relative to the energy emitted by a blackbody radiator heated to the same
temperature.
This value is dimensionless as it describes the ratio between these two measurements
quoted as a value between 0.00 and 1.00. A true blackbody radiator will have a value of 1
which means it will re-emit all the energy it absorbs and a perfect reflector would have an
emissivity of 0, absorbing nothing. The term “low emissivity” refers to surfaces with values
close to 0, typically 0.02 to 0.2 in the glass industry.
EPDM
A synthetic rubber used to produce gaskets and setting blocks.
Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate (EVA) Interlayer
An elastic interlayer film based on the ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer. which is used to
bond glass together in the laminating process.
Excess
Extra that is not needed.
Face mitre
The application of a mitred edge to the front surface of a pane of glass.
