Outline for learning module using organophosphate poisoning as an example. Part I: Scenario A woman presents at an outpatient department with symptoms of mildmoderate organophosphate poisoning for 2 weeks. Students must enquire further to arrive a proper diagnosis; use tutor's notes for supplying information when requested. Part II: Case management This part calls for the student to make clinical decisions in an out-patient department situation, as well as consider a response to a commuiilty problem. Part III: Community survey/screening The other probable cases are considered and there is a site visit to the farm in question for a survey and screening with a plasma cholinesterase test. The first patient has continuing symptoms. The causes of the poisoning are investigated. Part IV: Epidemiology of pesticide poisoning in Thailand: burden of illness Different information sources of poisoning data are reviewed and the student is asked to evaluate them critically. The concept of "the population at risk" is discussed. Information from a Thai community survey is presented. The results and limitations of the study are discussed. Alternative methods to collect better hospital and community data are discussed. a Numbers refer to sources listed below.
