The role of botanical substances in plant-insect interactions must be investigated with emphasis on the basic mechanisms that underlie the insects' response to and avoidance of xenobiotics. Such studies will contribute to our understanding of the mechanisms involved in the development of insect resistance to chemicals and will facilitate biotechnological developments and improve pest-management strategies. The search for new, naturally occurring insecticides and synergists represents a challenge to pest-management specialists and toxicologists. The need to control an increasing number of resistant species requires the identification of compounds with novel modes of action. No significant improvement in vector control can be envisaged without a drastic change in the nature of the biochemical tools available.
