20% due to differences in cost of inputs and 4% due to differences in selling
price. Remembering that 97% of the experimental field received no insecticide
and 85% received no treatment at all, this is strong support for the effectiveness
of natural control in combatting eggplant pests.
On the basis of these findings, recommendations were prepared for the
integrated management of eggplant pests based on natural control augmented
by the monthly release of Trichogramma and Euborellia. Plans are underway to
test this strategy on another farm in Calamba.
Farmers have difficulty monitoring their fields for insects (UPL13 1990). The
recommendations advocate monitoring by field inspection, but procedures
could be simplified to reduce the time involved. Monitoring by inspection of
harvest culls is suggested, and ongoing work on a Leucinodes pheromone could
provide pheromone traps for continuous monitoring. Either would provide a
cheap, easy, and quick method for following the shoot borer's life cycle and
timing release of biological control agents.
