- E P I C H I K E S O F T H E W O R L D -SHIKOKU’S 88 SACRED TEMPLES PILGRIMAGEA legendary Japanese journey in the footsteps of the great saint Kōbōdaishi,where pilgrims endeavour to attain enlightenment on a 1200-year-old Buddhist pilgrimage.
Everything I needed was at Temple 1, the Ryōzen-ji, the first of 88 little goalson my 870-mile (1400km) journey. Or make that 89, because to do thepilgrimage properly, I’d have to round Shikoku’s 88 temples, then walk backto Temple 1 and complete the circle – for a circle is like the search forenlightenment, never-ending. It is said that the great saint and founder of ShingonBuddhism, Kōbō-daishi (AD 774–835), achieved enlightenment on Shikoku and for1200 years, henro (pilgrims) have been striving to attain the same.I bought a pure white pilgrim shirt emblazoned with the words Dogyo Ninin inblack on the back: ‘We go together’. Pilgrims are not alone, as Kōbō-daishi’s spiritwalks with them. A wide pilgrim’s hat was next, the kind you see farmers wearing inrice paddies, to shield my head from the sun and to keep rain off my face. Then atsue, or pilgrim’s staff, to help me climb the mountains – and there would be a lotof mountains. I also purchased a nokyo-cho, a book for the ‘signatures’ of all 88
