SACRED CHINESE MOUNTAINS

TÀI SHĀN

The eastern mountain of China’s Wu Yue (Five Great Mountains), Tài Shān, in

Shāndōng Province, is associated with sunrise, birth and renewal and as such is

usually regarded as the most revered of all mountains in China. The main route up

from Dai Temple (490ft, 150m) to Jade Emperor Peak (5026ft, 1532m) has been

used since the 3rd century AD and is strewn with a bewildering number of muchvenerated

trees, bridges, inscriptions, caves and temples. Largely forested, the

route is almost 6 miles (9km) long, and despite being stepped all the way (as all

China’s sacred mountains are) it still takes around six hours to reach the top, where

you can find accommodation before easing your way down one of the other three

routes the following day.

Start/End // Dai Temple in Tai’an

Distance // 11 miles (18km) round trip; 4600ft (1400m) climb
