ORIENTATION

Start/End // Rawhiti

Distance // 20 miles (32km) round trip

Getting there // The nearest major airport to the Cape Brett Track is Auckland,

around four hours’ drive from the trailhead. There’s no public transport. A couple of

homes in Rawhiti offer hiker parking for around AU$5.

Tours // The walk to Cape Brett Lighthouse takes a full day, requiring an overnight

stop at the lighthouse-keeper’s cottage before returning along the same track. It’s

possible to walk just the most dramatic section, from Deep Water Cove to the

lighthouse, with two watertaxi companies – Wainot (www.wainot.co.nz) and Bay of

Islands Water Taxi (www.boiwatertaxi.co.nz) – ferrying hikers to either point.

Where to stay // Stays in the lighthouse-keeper’s cottage must be pre-booked,

which can be done through the Department of Conservation website
