Tai Long Wan Beach, or Big Wave Bay
UNDEVELOPED HONG KONG
Most people’s image of Hong Kong involves skyscrapers and neon. But the city is
75% countryside, much of that contained inside 24 parks and 22 ‘special areas’.
These include mountain forests, rocky foreshores, open grasslands and marine
reserves. Developers would love to get their hands on more of the land but much of
it is too mountainous or remote to be of that much use.

Geography // The city has three main parts: Hong Kong Island, Kowloon
Peninsula and the New Territories. The Hong Kong Trail is on Hong Kong Island.
Getting there // Hong Kong International Airport is on the island of Lantau. From
here, take a taxi, bus or Airport Express train to Hong Kong Island. To get to the
trailhead, take a taxi, the 15 bus or the Peak Tram to Victoria Peak.
When to go // Late autumn into early winter (Nov–Jan) is generally Hong Kong’s
pleasantest season, with clear skies and moderate temperatures.
Where to stay // Hong Kong Island has convenient, but expensive,
accommodation. You’ll find cheaper digs across the water in Kowloon.
