the rocky path to Deià

Well rested, I brace myself for a nine-hour hut-to-hut hike delving deep into the

mountainous backcountry on day six. After a coffee on the plaza in the lovely hill

town of Sóller, the trail ambles on through lemon and orange orchards, now

billowing with white blossom, climbing steadily to the sweet hamlet of Biniaraix,

tucked among gardens and the Tramuntana’s grey stone flanks. A stone path

wends up the Barranc de Biniaraix ravine and on to the Puig de l’Ofre (3586ft,

1093m), where the puckered, pale-grey peaks stand out against the azure water of

the Cúber reservoir. It has been a long day and my legs are thankful when I finally

reach the remote mountain hut of Tossals Verds.
