Oboke Gorge

Known as the pilgrim’s testing ground, Kochi prefecture makes up more than a

third of the pilgrimage’s distance, but has only 16 of its temples. Kochi faces the

not-too-aptly named Pacific Ocean and was always regarded as one of the wildest

and most remote parts of Japan. Its highlights include Muroto-misaki (Cape

Muroto), where it is said that Kōbō-daishi achieved enlightenment, and Ashizurimisaki

(Cape Ashizuri), both of which are weather-battered capes hosting

spectacular temples. The longest distance between temples on the pilgrimage is

the 57 miles (92km) from Temple 37 to Temple 38 at Ashizuri-misaki. I marched

through Kochi in 10 days.
