STROMBOLI CLIMB, AEOLIAN ISLANDS, SICILY

Stromboli is like a big black beast breathing fire and fury in the middle of the

Tyrrhenian Sea. Indeed, this super-active 3031ft (924m) volcano-island has been

erupting almost continuously for around 2000 years. Miraculously, you’re still

permitted to climb it, as long as you join a guided group. Trips up its ashen flanks

usually leave late afternoon or early evening to ensure that you arrive at the summit

in time to see a spectacular sunset sinking into the sea. It also means you’re in time

to appreciate the full effects of Stromboli’s impressive red-hot magma-spewing

pyrotechnics against the darkening sky. The descent is then completed by headtorch,

lunar glow, star twinkle and the lights of the Italian mainland dancing across

the waves.

Start/End // Stromboli town

Distance // 5 miles (8km)
