Germany’s oldest hiking and mountaineeringclub still maintains and waymarks 14,300 miles (23,000km) of footpaths in the BlackForest. The Romans might have appreciated them when they reached its fringes2000 years ago. So dark and forbidding did they find their surroundings that theynamed the impenetrable forest ‘Silva Nigra’ – a black, murky forest.

After a coupleof quiet days rambling through dense forest, where occasionally the canopy cracksopen to reveal the valleys below, I reach the gentle hills of Kinzigtal, where thehalf-timbered village of Hausach hunkers below a ruined medieval castle.
