Sometime in the early afternoon I would reach an albergue, one of the hostels

along the Camino that provide accommodation for pilgrims. The most memorable

were atmospheric places in ancient parochial buildings, with dinners eaten at

communal tables and bunks up in the rafters. Other places had swimming pools; in

the hot summer weather the cool relief of a dip in a river or pool was the refreshing

highlight of the day.

Often I would get the heads-up about a good albergue from one of the pilgrims

who had walked the Camino before. Stefan and Carina, a German couple in their

twenties who had met on the Camino and were re-walking the route on their

honeymoon, were a good source of information.

It was Stefan who told me about Anya’s house in the village of Ages. The timberframed

house with pink exterior walls looked like it belonged in a fairy tale, as did

Anya herself, a Norwegian woman in her sixties with long grey hair. There was room

in her loft for eight people.
