CALDERA DE TABURIENTE, LA PALMA

The northwesternmost of the Canaries, La Palma is, it’s claimed, the world’s

steepest island. This volcanic speck soaring from the Atlantic Ocean is also a

verdant dream for hikers, laced with some 620 miles (1000km) of waymarked trails.

In its centre rises Caldera de Taburiente National Park, dominated by its namesake

crater – a 5-mile (8km) wide cauldron filled with Canarian pines, laurels, flowers

and birds, venue for La Palma’s most memorable hike. From the viewpoint at

Mirador de los Brecitos, the trail curls around the crater’s inner rim, delving into a

spectacular ravine past a once-sacred rock outcrop; a worthy detour accesses the

bijou multi-hued waterfall known as the Cascada de Colores.

Start // Mirador de los Brecitos

End // Las Viñas car park

Distance // 9 miles (14km)

More info // Book a taxi to the Mirador from the nearby town of Los Llanos de Aridane
