mythical Yellow Emperor, Huángshān (Yellow Mountain) has been one of China’s

most revered geological features, drawing hermits, poets and artists inspired by its

dramatic landscape. The Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai dedicated works to the

mountain and depictions of Huángshān helped establish the Shan Shui (Mountain

and Water) school of landscape painting.

ORIENTATION

Start // Yungu Station (foot of Eastern Steps)

End // Mercy Light Temple Station (foot of Western Steps)

Distance // 14 miles (22.5km)

Altitude // From 2920ft (890m) at Yungu Station to 5807ft (1770m) at White

Goose Ridge.

Duration // Two days total; nine hours’ hiking.

Getting there // Buses shuttle between Tangkou, Yungu Station and Mercy Light

Temple Station. Tangkou is reached by bus from cities including Hángzhōu (3½

hours) and Nánjīng (five hours). Tunxi is an hour by bus from Tangkou.

Where to stay // In Tangkou, hotels cluster on Tiandu Lu. Túnxī is nicer – try Old

Street Hostel (http://hiourhostel.com). On Huángshān summit, Shilin Hotel

(http://shilin.com) and Beihai Hotel (www.beihaihotelhuangshan.com) have dorms

and rooms.
