HIKING AMID HIGHLAND COWS, PENTLAND HILLS, SCOTLAND

Highland cows are thought to have roamed the rugged Scottish landscape since

the 6th century. With their shaggy coats, long horns and long eyelashes, they’re

everyone’s favourite cattle breed and are especially popular with young children.

Swanston Farm in the Pentland Hills near Edinburgh is a great place for kids to

spot them. The herd roams the hills above the thatched cottages of the farm, which

has been a conservation area since the 1970s. From the hills you can enjoy

wonderful views of Edinburgh, the Lothians and the Firth of Forth, and there’s also

a good chance of spying some of the other farm residents, including badgers,

foxes, red kites and barn owls, plus the unusual collection of moss, lichen and

fungi, including the brilliantly named Candle Snuff Fungus and Scurfy Deceiver.
