CABO DE GATA COAST WALK, ANDALUCÍA, SPAIN
This coastal walk runs along southern Spain’s most spectacular seaboard; first the
promontory’s flat, beach-lined western coast; and then on the rugged southern and
eastern coasts, strung with secluded beaches and coves. The locations of the
places you could stop for the night make it impossible to divide the walk into three
equal days, so we suggest a shorter third day, spending the first night in the
pleasant resort town of San José and the next at Las Negras, set on a pebbly
beach towards an imposing headland of volcanic rock. Along the way, the
combination of a dry, desert climate with the cliffs of the Sierra del Cabo de Gata
plunging towards the azure-and-turquoise Mediterranean waters produces a
landscape of stark, elemental grandeur. Between the cliffs and headlands are
strung some of Spain’s best and least crowded beaches.
