WALKING PILGRIMAGES

SOURCE OF THE GANGES, UTTARAKHAND, INDIA

The trek to Gaumukh is undertaken by thousands of Hindu pilgrims en route to the

sacred source of the Ganges. For many it is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to

cleanse the soul where the silent waters flow from under a huge wall of ice. A dip in

the bitter waters here is believed to wash away sins. While the company of pilgrims

has its own attractions, it is recommended to continue the trek to a camping spot

around the magnificent alpine meadow at Tapovan (14,600ft/4450m) on day three.

Stay at the sheltered campsite at Chirbasa (11,811ft/3600m) on the first night (and

also on the descent), and the rather desolate rest house and shelter at Bhojbasa

(12,434ft/3790m) the following evening. This trek across the glacial moraine

requires reasonable fitness, and acclimatisation is essential. Before you set out,

check if there are any new regulations (permits are mandatory) that may impact on

your itinerary.
