TRANSCONTINENTAL RAINFOREST TREK, COSTA RICA

Making its way from Quepos to Cahuita, this is possibly the only hiking option that

allows you to cross the entire North American continent without a truly significant

time investment. There are a few different routes that cross Costa Rica’s wild

interior, generally starting at the Pacific and trekking east to the Caribbean coast.

Along the way, you traverse volcanoes, jungle, cloud forests, waterfalls and hidden

pools and might spot some of the country’s incredible diversity of wildlife, including

monkeys, reptiles and exotic insects. This is not a trek that can be undertaken

without a guide. In addition to the wild landscapes, several of the routes cross

indigenous lands and may require a permit. However, plenty of outfitters offer

guided treks that can also incorporate cycling, kayaking, canyoning and other

adventurous endeavours.

Start // Quepos

End // Cahuita

Distance // 70 miles (112km)
