TIME AND TIDE

So you fancy tagging on an extra day or two in Mallorca’s north? Wise choice. The

coastline northeast of Pollença, the island’s most dramatic, is reached by a helterskelter

of a road, which you can cycle if you’re as fit as a fiddle. En route are

lookouts with views of a sea of deepest blue and the cliffs rearing above it like

shark fins. Spend some chill time on Platja de Formentor’s ribbon of pine-fringed

sand or head on to lighthouse-topped Cap de Formentor for a cracking sunset.

As the hike edges east on day seven, it enters high, rocky terrain, making for a

scramble up to the fortress-like summit of Coll des Prat (2749ft, 838m), from where

it’s possible to ascend 4478ft (1365m) Puig de Massanella, Mallorca’s secondhighest

peak, for captivating views over the eroded karst wilderness of the

Tramuntana to the sea beyond. Pilgrims and day-trippers mill around the Monestir

de Lluc, where I pause to glimpse the late-Renaissance basilica, before heading on
