HONG KONG HIKES

MACLEHOSE TRAIL

This trail goes east to west across Hong Kong’s New Territories, the large, heavily

rural district closest to the border of mainland China. It’s divided into 10 stages,

traversing some of the city’s most rugged and varied terrain. Start at the deep-blue

High Island Reservoir, on the craggy coast of the Sai Kung Peninsula. Puff your way

past atmospheric Hakka villages in the remote uplands, where tea and indigo once

grew and wild boar roam. Wind through the rocky outcrops of the Kowloon peaks,

including Amah Rock, said to look like a woman with a baby on her back. Watch

out for aggressive macaques near the reservoirs, and check out the WWII ruins on

Smuggler’s Ridge. Tackle Tai Mo Shan, the city’s tallest peak, at more than 3000ft

(900m), then descend gently through Tai Lam Country Park to the ‘village’ of Tuen

Mun (population half a million).

Start // High Island Reservoir

End // Tuen Mun

Distance // 62 miles (100km)

More info // This hike is usually attempted in stages, except as part of charity endurance races
