COAST-TO-COAST HIKES

WAINWRIGHT’S COAST TO COAST, NORTHERN ENGLAND

This long-distance walking trail was devised by legendary hillwalker Arthur

Wainwright in the 1970s and remains the most popular coast-to-coast walk in

Britain. Generally hiked in 12–15 days, the trail connects the Irish Sea in the west

with the North Sea in the east. It crosses through three national parks – the Lake

District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors – on its journey across

England. Though unofficial, the trail is well trodden and generally signposted. The

landscapes a walker encounters on this journey are truly epic, from the windswept

crags and fells of the Lake District to the upland tarns and waterfalls of the moors

and dales and finally the sweeping coast at Robin Hood’s Bay.
