LA SENDA PIRENAICA (GR 11)
Dividing France from Spain, the Pyrenees may not be as lofty as the Alps (the
tallest summit is Pico de Aneto, at 11,168ft (3,404m), but they’re arguably even
more gorgeous, blessed with diverse landscapes and abundant wildlife. The GR 11,
traversing the Spanish slopes, is one of three long-distance trails tracing the range.
And what a trek. From the Basque Country in the west, this extremely demanding
but rewarding 45-stage beauty takes in craggy gorges, wildflower-strewn meadows
and medieval villages to reach mainland Spain’s easternmost point in Catalunya.
Highlights include Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park, which is
studded with gem-like tarns, and the dramatic karst canyons of Ordesa y Monte
Perdido National Park – watch for magnificent, rare bearded vultures dropping
sheep bones to smash on rocks before gulping down the pieces.
