FAMILY-FRIENDLY WILDLIFE HIKES

LLAMA TREKKING IN YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, USA

Llamas are perfect hiking companions for Yellowstone, as they’re sure-footed, at

home on mountainous terrain, and they leave virtually no impact on the park’s

fragile trails. Your kids will love their long ears and lolloping style, while you’ll be

glad of their tent-and bag-carrying capacity. Yellowstone Llamas offers a range of

family-friendly pack trips, including the three-day hike and camping along the

Slough Creek Trail, which winds through magnificent mountain scenery but isn’t too

challenging beyond its initial climb. If you’re lucky you may spot a bear or hear

wolves howling at night, and there are ample meadow-grazing opportunities for

your llamas along the way. Back at the riverside campsite, kids will enjoy playing on

the rocks around the camp and in the river, which is also a great spot for fishing.

WALKING WITH ST BERNARD DOGS, MARTIGNY, SWITZERLAND

St Bernards have been the quintessential mountain rescue dog since the early 19th

century, when they guided lost travellers through the snow and mist at the Grand

St Bernard Pass in Switzerland, where they were housed at a monastery and bred

by monks. In 2005 the Barry Foundation took over the breeding of the original dogs

from the monastery. Though no longer used in rescues, you can still hear about

their fascinating history, including the story of the eponymous Barry, who saved

more than 40 people in his life, on guided walks organised by the foundation. The

90-minute walks take place in pretty woodland around Martigny along a route

that’s flat and suitable for young children, who will love holding the dogs’ leads

and giving them a good cuddle at the end of the walk.
