for the islands… perhaps the sirens do still sing?”

People have long been drawn to the wildly wonderful Amalfi Coast. Greeks,

Romans, Normans, Saracens, Arab-Sicilians and more have left their traces. But for

millennia, visitors and settlers alike were reliant on boats or a steep network of

footpaths and mule tracks to get around; their grape, olive and lemon harvests had

to be hand-carried up staircases hewn from the stone. The Sentiero degli Dei –

Path of the Gods – is the most famed of these old farmers’ trails, running for

around 5 miles (8km) between the hamlets of Bomerano and Nocelle, then

onwards to the seaside resort of Positano. And when you don’t have to carry a

huge basket of fruit on your head, it’s the most spectacular of strolls.
