Filled with Dutch courage, we forget our near-total lack of equestrian abilities
and any sense of peril and mount the packhorses, cantering down from the pass in
a giddy blur. By early afternoon we’re trotting into Juta. Chauki mountain rises
behind us like a gigantic rocky eagle at 11,424ft (3842m), and in the distant valley
ahead are hints that the gigantic 16,512ft (5033m) snow cone of Mt Kazbek might
be about to materialise. A jolly homestay hostess welcomes us in. ‘Before he
leaves,’ she suggests, ‘how about a small vodka for you and your guide? Just one
bottle.’ And so it continues. ME
