E4 TRAIL, CYPRUS
The final section of the famous E4 long-distance path, which traverses Europe,
crosses the Greek side of Cyprus, taking in much of the island’s south. Along the
way, the trail passes through some of the most stunning Cypriot landscapes and
intriguing historic sites imaginable. Byzantine monasteries nestled in the Troodos
Mountains, the island’s highest peak – Mt Olympus (not the famous one), the
mythic pools where Aphrodite is said to have bathed, the tunnel gorges of the
Akamas Peninsula. Due to its length, only extremely fit walkers with an excess of
time hike the whole thing in one go, but the fact that the trail is bookended by
international airports eases access greatly and allows walkers to dip in and out.
Starting from Larnaka in the east, you can spend several days hiking to Larnaka
Salt Lake and through the cypress groves of Rizoelia National Forest Park. Or from
Pafos in the west, the Akamas sea caves and gorges, and Aphrodite’s baths are
easily accessible.
