On the Alpine slopes above Engelberg, the marmots are whistling while

they work, but it’s a scream that catches my attention. I look up and

there, plunging from a gondola towards me, is a woman, her ankles tied

to a bungee cord, her scream bouncing between the mountains. Around me,

cowbells chime like applause.

As the scream fades away, I walk on. This woman may have fallen for the Alps –

literally – in an instant, but I have days rolling on ahead of me.

I’m here to walk across Switzerland, or at least a sizeable chunk of it. I’m hiking

on the Alpine Pass Route (APR), a puzzle of trails that cross the entire country –

Lake Geneva to Liechtenstein. Broken into 15 stages, it’s more than 199 miles

(320km) in length and crosses 17 passes, condensing Switzerland into one single

glorious journey on foot.

I’ve come to hike four stages of the APR, covering its finest and most dramatic

section, walking through and past some of the most famous names in the Swiss
