Getting there // Fly into Ljubljana, Slovenia, an hour’s bus ride from the
trailhead. Depart from Skopje, Macedonia, about 2½ hours by car from Lake
Ohrid.
When to go // The best Balkans hiking is in late spring (May and Jun) and autumn
(Sep and Oct).
Where to stay // Manned mountain huts, unmanned shelters and homestays
abound. Packing a tent widens options.
What to take // A sleeping bag, foul-weather gear, layers and sunscreen should
be in your backpack. Broken-in, high-quality hiking boots are a must.
