JANAPAR TRAIL, ARMENIA

The Caucasus’ longest single hiking trail notionally stretches 310 miles (500km),

winding from Vardenis on Armenia’s Lake Sevan to Hadrut in the self-declared

republic of Nagorno-Karabakh. However, only the main Hadrut-Kolatak section is

waymarked with the easy-to-spot yellow-on-blue footprint signs. Handily broken up

into village-to-village sections of around five hours’ daily walking, this is a hike

through remote foothill landscapes where you’re highly unlikely to meet any other

foreign walkers. Nonetheless, using map-guides on the ViewRanger phone app it

should be reasonably easy to find your way to such delights as the Karkar Canyon,

the Zontik waterfall, Dadivank and Gtichavank monasteries and the Azokh (Azıx)

cave, where archaeologists found the oldest humanoid remains in Eurasia. Beware:

although visiting Nagorno Karabakh is straightforward from Armenia, legally

speaking the region is an occupied region of Azerbaijan and entering is considered

an offence under Azerbaijani law.
