TOUR DU MONT BLANC
Arguably Europe’s most famous hike, the TMB passes through three countries as it
makes a lap around the highest peak in the European Alps. This circuit of about 110
miles (170km) loops out from Chamonix, crossing into Switzerland before returning
to the ever-popular French Alpine resort town. There are low-and high-route options
in many places, and the scenery is sublime, whether it be the Toblerone skyline of
the Grand Jorasses or the grandstand final views along the Aiguilles Rouge. For
most hikers, it’s a journey of 10–11 days (if that seems pedestrian you can always
run around it in the annual Ultra-Trail Mont Blanc), and accommodation is plentiful
along most stretches, though the popularity of the trail means it can be wise to
book ahead during the busy times of July and August. Expect to climb more than
30,000ft (9000m), or about the equivalent of summiting Everest from sea level.
