Defeating disappointment with panoramic views I am suddenlystartled by a voice behind me. ‘You want coffee? Real good coffee!’ Somehow I’dwalked straight past a trio of travellers brewing up on a precipitous ledge. But I’mkeen to press on. The light is perfect for spectacular afternoon views. And sureenough, beyond Umblung, the twin-peaked monster of the vast 21,000ft (6400m)Kang Yantse reveals its vast snowy flank. Meanwhile, cinematically illuminated bythe low sunshine, Hankar’s shattered fortress tower lies perfectly framed betweenbarren foothill folds. I gaze in wonder.
