PHOENIX PARK AND RIVER LIFFEY, DUBLIN, IRELAND

The 350-year-old Phoenix Park is Europe’s largest enclosed park, at 1752 acres (709

hectares). An oval-shaped tract of fields and woodlands, it lies above the north

bank of the River Liffey and is surrounded by busy roads and suburbs. It has a

network of extensive paths providing a great variety of walks, but we’d plump for a

roughly circular route concentrating on the eastern half, diverting to the quiet

banks of the River Liffey before returning to the park. Plot your walk via its

highlights: the People’s Gardens, the All-Ireland Polo Club, the Phoenix Monument

and Ashtown Castle; doubling back and diverting to the 1979 Papal Cross before

heading for Magazine Fort and the prehistoric burial chamber of Knockmaree

Cromlech. Crossing the River Liffey bridge, you’ll then turn left towards the Irish

National War Memorial Park. Your end point, the 220ft (67m) Wellington

Monument, was the world’s tallest obelisk in its day.
