Sri Lanka’s Adam’s Peak, illuminated at night

MT SINAI, EGYPT

Throughout human history, mountains have often been seen as places where

ordinary mortals have a chance to commune with the gods – and they don’t get

much holier than Mt Sinai, where according to the Abrahamic faiths, Moses

received the Ten Commandments. Now located in modern Egypt, there are two

main paths up the 8625ft (2629m) mountain: the traditional Steps of Penitence, a

3750-step staircase favoured by hardcore pilgrims, or a longer but easier path

that’s mainly used by camel trekkers. Both start at the 6th-century Monastery of St

Catherine, before diverging and converging again on the natural amphitheatre

known as Elijah’s Hollow, where you can have a cup of tea before tackling the final

750 steps to the summit. Holy revelations might not be guaranteed at the summit,

but you will be treated to a cracking sunrise.
