wonderful respite at Cala Luna beach

Cala Biriola appears far, far below like a shimmering vision. And after an

intense, scrambling descent, I feel I have earned the right to jump into the sea and

let the grime slide off me. Dragging myself away from the dreamy cove, the going

soon gets tougher. Before long I find myself on a precipice, my heart doing

cartwheels at the prospect of rappelling down an almighty cliff. I drop gently into

the void and hope for the best. My reward is Grotta del Fico, a yawning sea cave

encrusted with stalactites like drip candles.

The next day’s hike is to Cala Sisine, the end of the hike proper. It’s another

tough one, with some cliff climbing on a fixed via ferrata, narrow ridges, ravine

traverses and gulp-inducing drops. Abseiling down to the stunning bay sweaty and

bedraggled, I draw a few raised eyebrows from the holidaymakers sunning

themselves on the beach, who have taken the boat to get here.

After a while, you become accustomed to the Selvaggio Blu and what it can

throw at you. By its end I’m eager for a little more, and so continue on to the next
